The lie is getting  bigger and  bigger

That  night  I searched  his  travel  bag  .

Craig  told  me  he  was  leaving  soon  for  a three-day  business  conference  .

“  The company  is paying  for it  in  full  ,”  he said  . “  Just  work  meetings .”

However,  the  printed  itinerary  told  a different  story  .

Craig  wasn't  going  to  the conference  .

He was going  to play  at  the casino.

A boys  '  trip  full of  casinos  ,  shows  and  luxury  hotel  suites  .

It  wasn't  just  a lie  .

It  was  a performance  .

And  I stopped  being  an audience  .

Planning  the Truth

I made  two  calls  .

First  to  my  parents.

They were  furious  .

It wasn't  just  about  the money  ,  but  also  how  freely  Craig  lied  .

Then  I called  Eleanor  .

After  I explained  everything  to  her  ,  she fell silent  .

“  I thought  the  mail  was  just  late ,  ”  she said  quietly  . “  Craig  always  told  me  to  give  it  time.”

I felt a tightness  in my chest  .

“  I'm  so  sorry,”  I told  her  .

“  What  now?”  she asked  .

“  I'm planning  something  ,  ” I said  .

She stopped  .

"  Can I  come  ?"

“  Of course  ,”  I replied  .

“  You deserve  to  see  this  .”

Surprise  at  the airport

On  the day of  Craig's  "  conference  ,"  I offered  to  give him  a  ride  to  the airport  .

He  readily  agreed.

During  the trip  he  talked  about  how  tight  his  schedule  would  be  .

“  I might  not  have  time  to call,  ”  he  said  casually  .

I  just  smiled  and  nodded.

When  we reached  the  departure  point  ,  Craig  got out  of  the car  and  froze  .

My  parents  were standing  there  .

My  brother.

My  sister-in-law  .

I Eleanor.

“  I thought  we’d surprise  you,  ”  I  said  sweetly  . “  To  say  goodbye  .”

Craig  looked  like  he  had swallowed  a rock  .

My  father  picked up  Craig's  suitcase  .

“  Let's get  him  inside,”  he  said  calmly  .

Craig  started  making  excuses  .

But  no  one believed  him  .

Truth  at  the Gates

We stopped  at  the  departures  board  .

There was  no  flight  to  the conference  .

Just  a flight  to  his  true  destination  .

I turned  to  him  .

“  Craig,”  I said  quietly  , “  is  there  anything  you want  to tell  us  ?  ”

He tried  .

He muttered  half-truths  about  misunderstandings  and  transfers  .

Then  Eleanor  took a step  forward.

"  Did  you lie  about  sending  me  money  ?  "

Craig didn't  say  anything .

“  I waited  every  month,  ”  she  continued  quietly  .  “  I sat  by  the window  and  watched for  the postman  . ” 

My  heart  broke.

“  This  is not  love,”  she said  .

"  That's  not  how you treat  people  who  have  sacrificed  everything  for  you  ."

Returning  what  was  stolen​ 

I reached  into  my bag  and  pulled out  an envelope  .

There was  money  inside  which  I  found  .

Not  everything  -  Craig  released  some  .

But  what  was  left  I gave to  Eleanor  .

“  This  is  yours  ,”  I said  gently  .

She held  the envelope  carefully  ,  as if  it were  something  fragile  .

Then  she started  crying  .

Not  because  of  the money  .

But  because  finally  someone  showed  up  for  her  .

Leaving

We left  the airport  together  .

Craig  stayed  .

He  didn't  follow me.

He didn't  call  .

For  the first  time  he  looked  small  .

And  completely  alone.

That  night  he returned  to  an empty  house  .

His  key  still  worked.

But  not  for  long.

The divorce  papers  have  already  been filed  .

Final  farewell

After  the divorce  was finalized,  I  sent  Eleanor  a  handwritten  card  and  a  cranberry  pie  I  baked  before  sunrise  .

Inside  the card  I wrote  :

"  You were  always  the best  part  of  Craig  .  Thank you  for  reminding  me  that  I  deserve  better  .  "
